Wanted: Your Opinion! (For once...)

It's a rare opportunity, folks. Matt and I just picked up a great 11x7' Persian rug off Craigslist last night, and we're figuring out how/whether it works in our living room. There are several factors to consider, so we figured we'd put it out there for feedback. Here are some rough shots of things are they currently are (including a bit of messiness).

Things to consider:
  • The curtains. Too busy now?
  • The chairs. We always considered recovering the cushions on the mid-century chairs. Should we, and if so, with what color/pattern?
  • The wood trim. We've pretty much decided as of late to repaint the trim in this room white. Matt feels like it dictates the other colors in the room too strongly, as well as darkens the room and walls over all. I like it, but am willing to go for it as I've always liked white trim. Thoughts on this, with the added rug?
  • Wall color. Sounds crazy, but we're considering going white for this as well - perhaps just a teeeeeny shade off from the trim (if it's white). A cool white.
Okay, I know we asked for it. Go nuts!

*Note: I originally posted this on Umbrella Love, my other blog, by mistake, so apologies to the two of you whose posts got deleted. The perils of managing more than one blog!

Hmm. This is lovely. More delicate and less graphic that I originally had in my head.

The colors are hard to see from the photo actually, so I'll reserve some judgment on overall whether in works.

But don't repaint your walls or change your curtains. I think the pattern mixture works well with the chairs, but I can't quite tell about the color.

When are you sending me food pictures?!

I like it just the way it is! Great addition than the rug.

*with* the rug

I'm into busy and layered, pattered things, but you're right, something isn't quite jiving. I think it may be the size of the rug, which is perhaps a bit too big for the space and so swallows up other things. I'd have to see it in person though. And you may just have to live with it to see how it settles!

Interesting!
I like the size of the rug, but I also have a serious case of rug envy as we can't have any in our house.
I think the room is missing an accent color. All of the colors are in the same family, so they blend in together. While there are individual sharp colors, they are blending with the other sharp colors to become almost muted.

So maybe add a pop of something?

i kinda dig the rug. as it looks in these pictures, i'd say there's too much redish/brownish stuff all stuffed there in the center with the teak couch table on top of the rug and then the red/teak combo of the chairs.
so i'd grab some lighter, graphic fabrics to lay on the chairs and try that out for feel. browsing spoonflower just now i happened across this and immediately thought of you http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/559331#gallery. maybe not that exact fabric, but i think it's a direction that might work?
now as a bit of a teak chair enthusiast, i'd urge you to keep the original covers and just put a removable cover on top. but is that the original upholstery?

i'd keep the curtains. and really, curtains are so easy to change out later...

and i think white trim would be nice and give the room a fresh but calm feel. the wall color is hard to say... i guess paint the trim white and then see what you feel like?

anyways. it's going to be perfect soon! and i wish i was around to sew cushion covers for ya. ;)

I'll go against the grain and say that while it's a very nice rug, for me, it's not working. I'm looking at your furniture and I see "modern" (however defined) and I think the rug is fighting the style of the furniture.

I would go with a more graphic or textured rug (maybe something like the carpet squares) that pulls in the colors and is in step with other, more modern elements of the room.

Bottom Line = You have to live with it and you have to be happy with it. While it's good to solicit input, the final decision is going to be yours.

Otherwise, very nice job with your home!!! Take care!
